🎯 How do you solve the Cages?

If you are downloading an easy killer sudoku printable to learn the ropes, here is exactly how the rules differ from the classic game:

  1. The Core Rules Apply: Every horizontal row, vertical column, and 3×3 box must still contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.
  2. The Sum Cages: The grid is overlaid with dotted irregular shapes called “cages.” Every cage has a small number printed in its top-left corner.
  3. The Killer Rule: The digits you place inside a cage must add up exactly to the sum in the corner. Most importantly, you cannot repeat a number inside a single cage. (For example, a 2-cell cage that sums to 4 must be 1 and 3; it cannot be 2 and 2).

⚙️ Setting Up Your PDF

The generator above defaults to a Hard puzzle, four to a page, on A4 paper. Those defaults suit most solvers, but Killer rewards a bit of tuning before you hit download. Here is what each control actually changes on the printed sheet:

  1. Difficulty. The dropdown runs Easy, Hard, Harder, and Hardest. The only thing that changes between tiers is how many digits are already filled in for you: Easy hands you a dozen-plus givens to anchor the early arithmetic, while Hardest prints a board with at most one starting digit, so every cell has to be earned from the cage sums alone. The cage layout itself is solvable by logic at all four tiers.
  2. Density. Killer needs more scratch room than plain Sudoku because you are pencilling sum combinations into the corners of cells. If you intend to work through the cage math on the page rather than in your head, pick “1 (Large Print).” The four-per-page default is fine for a quick booklet but leaves little room to annotate a cage like “23 in four cells.”
  3. Page size and pages. A4, US Letter, and Legal are all there so the grid matches whatever your printer is loaded with; Legal gives the most vertical room if you want one big grid with margins to write in. Total Pages goes up to ten, which at four puzzles a page builds a forty-puzzle booklet in a single download.
  4. Answer key. Leave this on. Killer is easy to get almost right and then stall on a contradiction, and the appended solution pages let you confirm a single cell without scrapping the whole grid. The givens are printed in dark ink and the cage sums in red, so a solved key reads cleanly even in black-and-white.

🧮 The Cage-Combination Cheat Sheet

The fastest way into a Killer grid is to find the cages that can only be filled one way. A small cage with an extreme sum has almost no freedom, and spotting those “locked” cages first gives you anchor digits the rest of the board has to work around. Because no digit repeats inside a cage, the maths is tighter than it looks. Here are the combinations worth memorising before you sit down with a printed sheet:

Two-cell cages. These are the workhorses. The lowest and highest sums each have a single pair:

  • 3 can only be 1 + 2.
  • 4 can only be 1 + 3 (not 2 + 2 — no repeats).
  • 16 can only be 7 + 9.
  • 17 can only be 8 + 9.

A two-cell cage summing to anything from 5 through 15 has more than one option, so leave those until the locked pairs have boxed them in.

Three-cell cages. The extremes are just as rigid:

  • 6 can only be 1 + 2 + 3.
  • 7 can only be 1 + 2 + 4.
  • 23 can only be 6 + 8 + 9.
  • 24 can only be 7 + 8 + 9.

Our generator builds cages of two to five cells, so you will also meet four- and five-cell shapes. The same principle holds at the ends of their range: a four-cell cage summing to 10 must be 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, and one summing to 30 must be 6 + 7 + 8 + 9. When a locked cage sits inside a single row, column, or box, every one of its digits is barred from the rest of that unit — which is usually where your next placement comes from.

This matters most on the Hardest tier, where the generator prints at most one starting digit and sometimes none at all. With no givens to lean on, the locked cages above are your only foothold: find a 3-in-two or a 7-in-three, mark the forced digits, and let the Rule of 45 below carry you from there. On the Easy and Hard tiers the extra printed givens do some of that anchoring for you, which is why those sheets feel so different even though the cage logic is identical.

📐 The Rule of 45: Innies and Outies on Paper

Every row, every column, and every 3×3 box on a 9×9 grid contains the digits 1 through 9 exactly once, so each of them sums to 45. That single fact is the most powerful tool in Killer Sudoku, and it is far easier to use with a pencil and a printed grid than in your head.

The technique paper solvers call innies and outies works like this. Pick a box (or a row or column) and add up the sums of every cage that sits entirely inside it. If those cages cover eight of the nine cells, the ninth cell — the “innie” — must equal 45 minus that running total. One subtraction hands you a confirmed digit. The mirror case is the “outie”: when a cage pokes one cell outside the unit you are totalling, that outside cell equals the cage total plus 45, minus the sums of the fully-enclosed cages. It sounds fiddly written out, but on paper it is a quick sum you can scribble in the margin.

A quick worked example: suppose the top-left box holds cages summing to 12, 8, 9, and 8, and those four cages cover exactly eight of the box’s nine cells. Add them up — 12 + 8 + 9 + 8 = 37 — and the lone uncaged cell must be 45 − 37 = 8. You have placed a digit without testing a single candidate. That is the entire appeal of the method: it turns a wall of cages into ordinary subtraction.

You can stretch the rule across bigger regions too. Two stacked boxes sum to 90, three to 135, a full band of three boxes to 135 as well. Totalling a region that is almost completely caged, then subtracting, repeatedly cracks the corner of a board that otherwise looks frozen. This is exactly why a printed grid beats the screen for Killer: you have room to write the running totals beside each box and cross them off as you go.

✏️ Laying Out Your Scratch Math on a Printed Sheet

Killer demands more annotation than plain Sudoku because you are juggling two kinds of note at once: the usual candidate digits, and the arithmetic for each cage. A printed sheet gives you the space to keep them apart, which is the whole reason most serious solvers print rather than tap. A few habits keep the page readable:

  • Reserve the top edge of each cell for the cage sum. The generator already prints the sum in red in the top-left corner of a cage’s anchor cell, so write your own working lower down to avoid clashing with it.
  • Pencil candidate digits as a mini 3×3 in the cell. Treat the cell like a tiny phone keypad: 1 sits top-left, 9 sits bottom-right. Keeping a fixed position for each digit means you can scan a column for, say, every cell that still allows a 7 without re-reading every note.
  • Note cage combinations in the margin, not the grid. When you work out that a 15-in-two cage must be one of 6+9 or 7+8, jot “15: 69/78” in the white space beside the puzzle and draw a light arrow to the cage. The grid stays uncluttered and you can erase the margin note once the cage is solved.
  • Use the answer key as a checkpoint, not a crutch. Because every board is verified to have one solution, a single wrong digit eventually forces a contradiction. If you stall, check one suspect cell against the appended key rather than abandoning the whole sheet.
  • Print one puzzle per page when you are learning. The “1 (Large Print)” option gives each cell enough room for both a cage note and a full set of candidate digits. The four-per-page booklet layout is better once you can hold most of the cage maths in your head.
